Health & Healing

Throughout a character's journey in the world they will receive injuries and illness that may require medical help.
These things have a real inpact on characters and if left untreated can result in serious consequences for a character.

Injuries

Whether its from sliding down a hill a little hard, or being shot by a bandit, characters will receive various types and severity of injuries. These injuries will be tracked by the system and will have real impacts on the character's ability to perform tasks. Injuries will require treatment and healing to recover from. When a character is injured they will receive a visual notification and be able to see the status of their injuries in a UI panel. The panel will show basic information about the injury such as location, type and severity. Characters with more advanced skills in medicine will be able to see more detailed information about the injury and be able to provide treatment and prevent it from getting worse.

Severity
Injuries will have a severity level that will determine how long it takes to heal and how much it impacts the player.

  • Minor
Minor injuries will heal on their own over time, but may require some treatment to prevent infection or other complications. Minor injuries will have a small impact on the player's ability to perform tasks.
  • Moderate
Moderate injuries will require treatment to heal properly and will have a larger impact on the player's ability to perform tasks.
  • Severe
Severe injuries will require immediate treatment and may have long term impacts on the player's ability to perform tasks.
  • Critical
Critical injuries will require immediate treatment and may result in long term consequences if not treated quickly.

Location
The injury location will determine how the injury impacts the player. For example, a leg injury may reduce the players movement speed or ability to jump, while a hand injury may reduce the player's ability to use weapons or climb.

  • Head
Injuries to the head may cause dizziness, blurred vision or other effects.
  • Torso
Injuries to the torso may cause pain, difficulty breathing or other effects.
  • Arm
Injuries to the arm may cause difficulty using weapons or tools.
  • Leg
Injuries to the leg may cause difficulty moving or jumping.

Type
The type of injury will determine how the injury is treated and what side effects it may have.

  • Blunt
Injuries caused by blunt force trauma such a falling or being hit by a blunt object or fist. These injuries will range from bruises to broken bones.
  • Piercing
Injuries caused by sharp objects such as knives, bullets or arrows. These injuries will range from cuts to puncture wounds that can become infects, continue to bleed or result in potential organ damage with more severe side effects.
  • Burn
Injuries caused by heat or fire. These injuries will range from minor burns to severe burns that can cause intense pain and physical limitations.
  • Toxic
Injuries caused by ingesting or being exposed to toxic substances. These injuries will range from mild discomfort to major organ failure.

Illness

Characters will also be subject to illness that can range from minor colds to major diseases. Illness will have mostly minor impacts on the player's ability to perform tasks, but may require treatment to prevent them from becoming worse. Illness unlike injuries may spread if a character is infected and not treated or aware of the infection. Some illness can incubate for a perio before the character shows symptoms.

Healing

Characters will naturally heal many injuries and illness's over time, but some will require treatment to heal, and can grow worse if not treated or stabilized. Factors like blood loss, infection, broken bones and other conditions will make wounds more complicated to heal.

Healing without any treatment will always take longer to naturally heal.

Treatment

Injuries will require treatment to heal properly and prevent long term consequences. Treatment can be provided by players with medicine skills or by NPCs in the world (limited to minor injuries). If an injury is not treated in a reasonable amount of time it will be subject to addition side effects, and may also become more severe.

Wounds that have been treated are often reduced in severity and will heal faster.

Death

Outside strictly regulated RP Events and Storylines, perma-death is always the choice of the player. No one can force a character to die through injury or illness. If a player chooses to have their character die, they will be un-recoverable and will forever be lost to the world.

Forced Death

In some extreme cases the staff may force a character to die due to the actions of the character that warrant such punishment. Mostly this will be limited to Capitol punishment for high risk criminals that have commited multiple murders or especially heinous crimes. This will be a rare event and will only be done after a full investigation and proper trial has been conducted. Even in this case the story telling is still in the players hands they may choose Lifetime Incarceration instead of death.

Occasionally events or story lines may provide very high risk and high reward opportunities for characters, but in these cases the player must opt-in to the event and understand the risks involved. In these cases staff will communicate clearly with the player to ensure consent and agreement.
